Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday inaugurated the state’s first green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur, calling it “a big step” towards India’s energy transition. Developed by the Torrent Group, the facility is expected to produce 72,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually and blend it with natural gas for distribution, reports The Indian Express.
“This is the first such plant in Uttar Pradesh and only the second in the country. It will ensure blending of green hydrogen with CNG and PNG, paving the way for clean energy adoption,” the Chief Minister said.
As a pilot, the plant will initially blend 2% green hydrogen with natural gas for city gas distribution. Powered by a 2 MW renewable energy unit, it will produce hydrogen through electrolysis and cut carbon emissions by around 500 tonnes a year.
Adityanath stressed the role of alternative energy in combating climate change and highlighted Uttar Pradesh’s potential in green hydrogen due to its water resources. “This new energy might be costly for now, but just like mobile tariffs, it will become cheaper in the future,” he added.
The state government introduced a Green Hydrogen Policy last year, offering up to 40% capital subsidy for the first four projects. Officials said the Gorakhpur plant is among the first beneficiaries of these incentives.
Gorakhpur MP Ravi Kishan described the project as a “game-changer,” while Sahjanwa MLA Pradeep Shukla said such initiatives would help Uttar Pradesh achieve its vision of becoming a developed state by 2047. The Chief Minister also planted a Rudraksha sapling at the site to mark the state’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
