Malaysia launches first hybrid hydro floating solar and green hydrogen hub in Terengganu

Malaysia has marked a significant milestone in its clean energy transition with the launch of the country’s first hybrid hydro floating solar (HHFS) system and a green hydrogen hub in Terengganu. The initiatives were unveiled last Saturday as part of efforts to position Malaysia as a regional leader in green hydrogen and renewable energy, reports technode.global.

The projects are the result of a strategic collaboration between Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), national oil and gas company Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas), and investment arm Terengganu Inc. Together, the partners aim to support the goals outlined in the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR).

The Terengganu Green Hydrogen Hub is being jointly developed by TNB and Petronas. While Petronas focuses on hydrogen production and its derivatives, TNB is tasked with upgrading the grid infrastructure needed to support the country’s transition to low-carbon energy.

Meanwhile, the HHFS facility is a partnership between TNB’s power generation arm, TNB Genco Sdn Bhd, and Terengganu Inc. It aligns with the state’s ambition to drive socio-economic growth through clean energy development.

These projects are part of an integrated clean energy value chain that will span from renewable power generation to the production of green hydrogen and its derivatives, such as green methanol and green ammonia. The HHFS facility at Kenyir will serve as a key renewable energy source, while the Kertih area will host Petronas’ upcoming hydrogen electrolyser, derivative plants, and carbon capture and storage facilities.

According to TNB, the HHFS facility is part of a broader 2.5 gigawatt hybrid solar-hydro program that uses hydro plants as flexible storage systems, helping balance grid demand by conserving and discharging water as needed.

TNB President and CEO Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan called the partnership with Petronas a cornerstone of the utility’s clean energy mission. “This project supports Malaysia’s green hydrogen goals and demonstrates our commitment to NETR and HETR,” he said.

Petronas President and CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik said the initiative combines TNB’s power expertise with Petronas’ decades of experience in energy development. “This collaboration will help build a strong energy ecosystem to ensure long-term energy security and diversity for Malaysia,” he noted.

President and CEO of Terengganu Inc, Burhanuddin Hilmi Mohamed @ Harun, highlighted the state’s potential to become a leading destination for green energy investment. “With the backing of TNB and Petronas, Terengganu is well-placed to attract investors, build local talent, and become a global green energy hub,” he said.

The projects are also aligned with regional energy goals, supporting the ASEAN Power Grid, fostering clean energy trade, and promoting cross-border cooperation in renewable energy development.
