NLC India Ltd announced on Sunday that its subsidiary has secured a contract from Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Ltd (TNGECL) to develop standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. This marks NLC India’s first major venture into large-scale BESS initiatives.
In a regulatory filing to the BSE, the company stated: “NLC India Renewables Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of NLC India Ltd, has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from TNGECL for the development of three standalone BESS projects, with a combined capacity of 250 MW/500 MWh. These projects are designed for two full cycles of charging and discharging per day to meet on-demand energy needs.”
The projects will be executed under a build-own-operate model, with viability gap funding support, and were awarded through a competitive bidding process.
NLC India Ltd recently reported a more than fourfold increase in its consolidated net profit, reaching ₹468.46 crore in the March quarter of FY25. A public sector undertaking, NLC India is primarily involved in lignite mining and power generation, and has expanded its portfolio into renewable energy and coal mining both domestically and internationally.
