Japanese energy major Osaka Gas, founded in 1987, is strengthening its presence in India’s evolving energy market. Known for its longstanding expertise in gas production, supply, and pipeline infrastructure, the company also plays a significant role in power generation.
After building a strong footprint across Asia, the U.S., and Australia, Osaka Gas established its Indian arm—Osaka Gas India—in 2021. Four years on, the company is now driving forward an ambitious vision centered on sustainable and cleaner energy solutions for the country.
In an exclusive interview, Takeshi Shinohara, Managing Director of Osaka Gas India, shared insights into the company’s progress and future plans. “In just four years, our operational reach in India has expanded to cover around 10% of the country’s land area—comparable to the size of Japan,” Shinohara said.
The company has been actively involved in city gas distribution and pipeline development through its collaboration with Chennai-based Think Gas. This partnership has helped accelerate the rollout of urban gas infrastructure and ensured efficient energy delivery to growing cities.
Osaka Gas India’s long-term strategy in the country is built on three key pillars. The first is its core expertise in city gas operations. The second is an increasing focus on renewable energy. Through its partnership with CleanMax, a prominent Indian clean energy company, Osaka Gas is supplying solar and wind power to industrial clients aiming for sustainable energy sources.
“Our success in India is rooted in strong, trusted partnerships with local companies,” Shinohara noted.
The third and most forward-looking component of Osaka Gas’s strategy is E-Methane—an innovative clean fuel that combines traditional city gas with hydrogen generated from renewable sources. This solution is designed to create a low-emission, circulative energy model.
“E-Methane represents a major step toward sustainability, offering a reliable energy source that significantly lowers CO2 emissions,” Shinohara explained.
He also emphasized that India’s rapid economic growth and social changes are driving a surge in demand for smarter, greener energy options. “As India continues to rise economically, the need for cleaner and more efficient energy will only grow,” he said.
Unlike investors who adopt a passive approach, Osaka Gas brings a hands-on model, committed to transferring technical know-how and fostering long-term capability building in India. Shinohara described the company’s ethos as grounded in “Real Scene, Real Material, Reality”—a principle reflecting its dedication to practical experience and operational excellence.
Looking ahead, Osaka Gas views India as a crucial part of its international strategy. “By 2030, India will stand as one of the key pillars of our global business,” Shinohara predicted.
He also acknowledged the contrast between urban development and rural challenges, especially in agricultural regions, and stressed the importance of localized engagement. “Our goal is true symbiosis with Indian society—bringing together our global experience and local insight,” he concluded.
As India navigates a pivotal phase in its energy transition, Osaka Gas India’s integrated approach—anchored in innovation, partnerships, and sustainability—positions the company to play a key role in shaping the country’s energy future.
